HI!
We saw signs that Usain Bolt was coming to the island this week + signing autographs super close to our house. Everything makes you excited as a missionary (+ lets be real USAIN BOLT) so we scheduled our whole lunch around seeing him. We figured out exactly how we would invite him to church + everything! Then our hopes + dreams were crushed when we realized he had come two days earlier + we missed it :( Sad day!
Lu is on date! Our super awesome friend Lu, who's a 20ish yr old guy, randomly said he thinks he's ready to be baptized! He is seriously incredible! He's so in tune with the Spirit + really just wants to serve God. He knows baptism is what he wants to do, he's just struggling to turn away from worldly pressures.
One thing that S. Cutright + I have talked a lot about this week is that being obedient often feels like something you don't want to do at first. It may feel like you are being restricted + trapped, but really when we're obedient it leads to soooo much more FREEDOM. Disobedience and sin often looks like it's the better way to go, it looks like it brings happiness, etc. when really it leads to captivity. You become so trapped and miserable. There are a lot of people here who go to alcohol to cover up their hardships or sorrows. BUT that just brings a horrible cycle of misery. Worldly things CANNOT bring lasting happiness. Some people haven't felt true happiness though because they have never known about the gospel of Jesus Christ. These people search for happiness in drugs, alcohol, bad friends and never find what they're looking for. That's Satan's tool! Jesus Christ's teachings are very paradoxical. They may not really make sense at first, but as we obey them we have so much freedom.
I kinda like to think of it like this:
sin > captivity - it looks like you have so many blessings, happiness, freedom THEN you become trapped + miserable.
righteousness < freedom - it looks like you're really restricted BUT once you choose the right so many more possibilities, blessings, and freedom open up to you.
Choosing Heavenly Father + Jesus Christ is the way to go! As we decide to follow them, they open up a whole range of freedom and happiness that can't be found anywhere else. I'm so grateful to have the knowledge of this gospel! It just makes so much sense!
